The Greenway Stroll.-One Year on.

A year on from a peaceful mass demonstration against our current owners, that saw over 8,500 fans take to the Greenway before Southampton at home, and some things have changed. Our next mass demonstration remains on hold due to COVID-19 and West Ham sit fourth in the league.



Some things, haven’t changed.



So why do the calls for new ownership still ring out loud and clear across large sections of the fanbase and what might we be able to learn when preparing to work alongside new owners?

As captured by our recent supporter survey, the sentiment felt at the club over different aspects of its running is polarised. West Ham fans are a reasonable bunch when it comes to expectations on the pitch. We are well aware that we have never finished higher than 3rd in the top domestic league and that our last cup triumph was over 40 years ago. We thoroughly enjoy the good times, such as the outstanding form the team is producing right now, and we bemoan our lack of success in the bad times. Supporter sentiment over football related matters is overwhelmingly positive.



Herein lies the answer, at the most basic level, as to why the calls for new ownership continue. Sentiment around the running of all other aspects of the club is overwhelmingly negative. The calls for new ownership are not related to the form of our team or the signings of our manager. In short, fans want everything besides the football given an overhaul, with a fresh approach from a fresh set of custodians.



Undoubtedly, the botched stadium move has caused the most pain. And of course, we cannot go back. However, the situation remains that we are playing in a rented athletics stadium which does nothing to enhance any atmosphere created and we would ask new owners to give serious consideration to structural changes or even the prospect of a purpose-built ground.



Moving away from the construction of the stadium itself, the matchday experience has been sanitised to such a point that it is unrecognisable from the one we came to know and love in a previous era. In the absence of an immediate fix regarding the stadium, we would ask new owners to find a solution that makes it possible for local businesses, sellers and stewards employed by the club, to take the place of the company’s managing our experience at present.



Far from being a club with no culture, as we were once described, we have a rich culture just waiting to be embraced. A celebration of this culture at our home as well as an embodiment of this culture running through everything at the club would help fix some of what has gone wrong. New owners might want to start with a consultation over the much-maligned crest which sports the word ‘London’ and appears to stray from our history and traditions.



Besides some of the more obvious issues, such as the interest charged on loans, that supporters might have with our current owners, it would seem we are a point of no return due to the lack of trust that exists. Ultimately, supporters would want new owners who will work closely with fans groups and take their point of view into consideration, when making decisions that affect them. The catalogue of decisions that have led people to question the intentions of our current owners, such as the season ticket waiting list or the decisions made about the upkeep of the memorial gardens to name but two, cannot be added to.



As long as the call for new ownership remains, Hammers United will answer that call with organised, peaceful demonstrations away from the 90 mins of football where people have come to get behind their team.



Hammers United will also continue to carefully prepare a set of principles that will allow us to work with purpose alongside new owners from day one.

All you've got to ask Jim White and the gang (or the media as a whole when they say what is our problem when the team is doing well) is.....

....do THEY think the owners will sustain it?

....do THEY think the owners will invest into the FOOTBALL SIDE to keep us up there?

....do THEY think they (the owners) will turn on Moyes if he doesn't carry on this minor miracle he is achieving?

....do THEY think West Ham players need to move on to achieve their potential?

Throw it all back their way, ask them if they would buy into the owners schemes like we have loyally in vast numbers?

Then maybe they will see why this is getting harder to trust the right things are being done in the football running of the club.

Me and you had quite a chat after the March , you told me things about the owners that l wouldn’t repeat ,l want them gone but like everyone else ecstatic about the season so far this is becoming a no win situation , if we put pressure on them Jim white and the gang will continue to make mugs of us every way they can , if we don’t keep up with the protests it will be fickle West Ham fans have gone quite !

'Think of how it appears to the wider footballing community. We are fourth in the league, having our best league season for literally decades yet people still want to moan and protest.'

I think it makes us look consistent, not wavering because we've had relative success in the league (which has a long way to go before it can be considered anything other than progress.)

Simply put, it's right we continue to demand a change in ownership at the very least to those that are satisfied, for more ambitious owners who are able to deliver on the football front, and for us that want a recognition of our past, heritage and culture, a board that recognises that and helps maintain it.

The right owner could have the best of both worlds, success on the pitch leading to improved finances and a happy support who feel the club see us as anything more than the cash cow GSB see us as.

If we want the stadium converted for football we need to own it. There is no way Sadiq Khan is going to do business with GSB. Brady has got Boris & Shaun Bailey in her pocket so the best thing West Ham supporters can do is vote Bailey for London Mayor.

Decent manager, good football, top 6 finish. Add a refurbed stadium. Patience is a virtue.

I had a season ticket for 20 years from 1990 - 2010, my old man from the 70s - the 2nd season after the move. His many mates have all stopped apart from one. The majority of my old friends have stopped too. Every one of us would still snap up any away ticket whether we are near the bottom or the top.

Success means nothing to any of mr because i have never had it. I wanted to take my two little boys to Upton Park to experience what i did. Seeing us win a trophy with my dad would top everything, but it’ll probably never happen. Seeing us win a trophy and be a part of an open top bus parade down green street definitely will not happen.

The board sold the clubs soul to line their own pockets. They know it. We know it. It’s too late now, so they might as well fuck off as the most hated people in our history, with their pockets full of cash. They also have the luxury now of leaving on a high having lucked out given that Moyes wasn’t just cheap and desperate, but actually still a very good manager.

If we were to win the league, I’d never forgive them and still want them gone tomorrow.

They arent done with stripping the club yet.
Once they have sold Rice then they will move on,which will more than likely be this summer.
An offer of 80mill should do it regardless of whether Rice wants to go or not.

Iam with hammers united all the way, team in top six, but if we dont get champs league, i think we will throw away the euro league, we have done it twice, i want gsb gone any way possible.

I think we are missing a fundamental factor here with us doing well.....the biggest gripe we've always had over the decades even prior to these horrible tunnel vision 'pound sign in the eyes' owners is the inability to either sustain or build on a good season. This to me is a snippet of what good owner could have with us as a support, this is also another short period of us doing well yet it is being spoken about like it will be the norm.....very far from it.... that is our gripe.

It’s not really a case of Hammers United pushing for GSB OUT while we are playing well. It’s more that the members of HU answered a recent survey that clearly shows they want them out. The survey was done not so long ago, during this wonderful football results season, so the many thousands of supporters have made their feelings known.

The truth is.... the vast majority of football fans are fickle fuckers... and we come under that... 12-18 months ago the GSB OUT campaign would be in a lot stronger position than it is today...

I would like better owners, but I’m not sure new owners will be better.

I hope that for now HU can start getting their message to the owners. Finally the owners have accepted HU in an independent supports group, we need to see how that goes. I’m ok with protests to push for more supporters involvement in the running of the club and to get new owners that supporters want.

I am sure it’s dream land, but ownership of the club by supporters is the best option.

The aim should be to ensure that it doesn't ever get to an "if" in this respect.
